Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, Devon

Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, Devon

This is the famous Royal Albert Bridge, a majestic lenticular structure designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to carry the Cornwall Railway across the River Tamar at Saltash. Opened by the Prince Consort in May 1859, the 2200 foot bridge cost £255, 000 to build. Originally part of Brunel's broad gauge network, the track here was converted to standard gauge width in 1892..
