Although a Royal Palace has stood on this site since about 1040 AD, most of the present Palace of Westminster, to give the Houses of Parliament its official name, was built 1839-1854. Westminster Bridge was the second masonry bridge over the Thames in London. It was originally built in 1750, and damaging the structure carried the death sentence.
