The disease is characterised by loss of bone density and deterioration of bone tissue. The damaged vertebrae have become compressed, distorting the shape of the spine. Osteoporosis mainly affects post-menopausal women. Risk factors include a family history of the disease, smoking, heavy drinking, lack of oestrogen in women, and lack of testosterone in men.
