Waxing crescent Moon. Optical image of awaxing (increasing in apparant size) crescentMoon. The phases of the Moon are due to itpresenting a differing amount of its sunlit faceto the Earth during its orbit. When the Moon is onthe same side of the Earth as the Sun, the entirenight side of the Moon faces Earth, and we see anew Moon. Around 14 days later, the Moon is on theopposite side of the Earth from the Sun, and wesee its full sunlit face; a full Moon.
