Navvy camp near Woodford

Thought to have been photographed near Woodford, this is one of the many hutted camps which were erected by the contractors to house the navvies at work on the Last Main Line. Despite being comparatively simple, the accommodation that was available at these temporary communities was of significantly better quality than the primitive dwellings endured by navvies for much of the nineteenth century.
