Hilda the Humorous Hippo Enjoys Her Little Joke: The situation seems a little tricky for zoo keeper Matthew Wilson as he is caught bending by a hungry-looking hippopotamus. Hippo Hilda's huge jaws open wide - poised, it seems, for one almighty bite that would leave the unfortunate Mr. Wilson feeling very aggrieved indeed. It is a sight that has been known to cause considerable alarm among visitors to the Phoenix Park Zoo in Dublin. But the zoo people, who know a humorous hippo when they see one, are not all that bothered. They say: "Ever since we got Hilda from a zoo in Rotterdam in 1962, she has shown she loves playing tricks. We know she is only joking when she opens her mouth, but those teeth make strangers think otherwise." Matthew has gone along with the joke so far, developing an amusing double act with the happy hippo. Playing straight man to her, in fact. But wisely he keeps a careful eye on Hilda's fearsome choppers. After all, a hippo with a sense of humour might just be tempted to go the whole hog one day. Just for laughs.
