Martian crater, Acheron Fossae

Martian crater. Mars Express image of a craterin the Acheron Fossae region of Mars. The crateris 55 kilometres wide, and was formed by anancient impact by an asteroid. There is alsoevidence of past geological activity on Mars. Theridges and canyons (horsts and grabens, verticalfeatures) were caused by movements of the Martiancrust. They extend into the older impact crater.Some smaller impact craters are also seen. Thisarea is about 1000 kilometres north of OlympusMons. Taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera.Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December2003.
