Mars. Mosaic of images taken by the Viking Iand II probes centred at a latitude of 30 degreesnorth and a longitude of 270 degrees. The northpolar cap (white) is clearly visible at topcentre. It is formed by water ice and frozencarbon dioxide and extends outward about to the 80degrees latitude circle. The north polar region issurrounded by a vast circumpolar plain (dark), known as Vastitas Borealis, having a diameter ofabout 10, 000 km. The equatorial band and thesouthern hemisphere of the planet are marked byheavily cratered areas which contrast with thesparsely cratered plains of the northernhemisphere..
