Knee replacement. Coloured X-ray of aprosthetic knee implant (brown), of a femalepatient's left leg (side view). The implant isattached by pegs (at upper and lower centre) intothe femur and tibia bones (grey) respectively, with surgical cement. The flexible joint (centre)can hinge like the old joint, and the kneecap( patella, centre right) is also seen. Theimplant replaced the old joint that had becomedamaged or lost cartilage, possibly due to anaccident or osteoarthritis.
