Influenzavirus B. Coloured transmission electronmicrograph (TEM) of particles of the influenza Bvirus, which is the cause of influenza (flu) inhumans. The virus particles have anenveloped outer coat, or capsid, bearing theproteins (cream) haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to enterand leave host cells. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, insteadentering cells and hijacking their biochemicalmachinery to produce more copies of the virus. Fluusually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever andnausea. Influenza B, however, is less virulent thaninfluenza A, due to the limited host range and itsslower rate of evolution (by 2 to 3 times)..
