Most of the visible surface consists ofthe folds of the cerebral cortex, theregion responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. Thecerebral cortex partially covers two structures atthe rear base of the brain. The cerebellum (smooth, lower right) controls balance, postureand muscular co-ordination.
