The Hanbury Brown interferometer consistsof six 22 metre diameter radio telescopes that arecombined by a technique called aperture synthesisto simulate a giant telescope with a diameter ofup to 6km. Five of the telescopes are mounted on a3km track and the sixth is located 3km furtherwest. A computer combines the signals to create avery high resolution image, which is used tomeasure the angular size of stars.
