French Dragoon J840003

Engraving of a French Napoleonic soldier produced in Paris. A corporal of the 16th Regiment of Dragoons, leaving camp. Pencil annotation indicates that for this regiment the plume should be red, not white as shown. In 1815 the 16th Dragoons formed part of General Maurins 7th Cavalry Division, attached to Gerards IV Corps. They took part in the Battles of Ligny (16th June) and Wavre (18th-19th June), but failed to defeat the Prussian rearguard in time to have an effect at the Battle ofWaterloo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving of a French Napoleonic soldier, known as the French Dragoon J840003. Produced in Paris, this artwork depicts a corporal from the renowned 16th Regiment of Dragoons, captured in motion as he leaves camp. A keen eye will notice a pencil annotation on the print indicating that for this particular regiment, the plume should be red instead of white as depicted. This small detail adds to the historical accuracy and authenticity of this remarkable piece. In 1815, during one of history's most significant conflicts - The Battle of Waterloo - the 16th Dragoons played a crucial role under General Maurin's 7th Cavalry Division within Gerard's IV Corps. Although they valiantly participated in the Battles of Ligny on June 16th and Wavre from June 18th to 19th, their efforts fell short when attempting to defeat the Prussian rearguard in time to impact Waterloo. With its military significance and intricate details capturing both uniform nuances and historic events, this engraving serves as an invaluable artifact for enthusiasts and historians alike. Preserved by Historic England Photo Library, it offers us a glimpse into France's military past during Napoleon Bonaparte's era while commemorating those who fought bravely at Waterloo.
