Free-floating planets. Computer artwork of twogas giant planets moving through space. They arenot orbiting a star, but have formed independentlyand are called free-floating planets. Their massis generally higher than that of Jupiter, thelargest planet in our solar system, but less thanthat of a brown dwarf. Brown dwarfs can beconsidered cool stars, or large planets, that areinsufficiently massive for nuclear reactions to beignited. Cool stars and large planets can bedetected by the heat (infrared radiation) theygive off, which is generated as they slowlycollapse by gravitational contraction.
