The 33.19 carat stone was a gift from one of her former husbands, Richard Burton, who paid pounds 200, 000 for it in 1968. Today, it would be worth more than pounds 2million. It weighed down her left hand as she waved it at photographers at the Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane as she arrived for a tribute dinner - where she was bestowed with a British Film Institute fellowship. She also wore a diamond bracelet, a recent gift from her friend Michael Jackson, as well as a pair of diamond and emerald earrings to embellish her just-offthe-shoulder gold gown. The earrings were a more recent purchase. 'I was walking through the lobby of the Dorchester and passed one of those glass boxes and I saw these earrings, ' she said. 'I was like a robot and I went, "You're mine, you're mine". I bought them there and then.'
