Coloured LM of human tracheal epithelium andamp;amp; cilia

Trachea epithelium. Coloured light micrographof a section through the wall of the human trachea(windpipe) showing ciliated epithelium. Cellsof the epithelium are seen here, with thesurface layer of cells containing hair-like cilia (at top) which project into the airspace of the trachea. The nuclei of these cellsare red. Goblet cells (orange) secrete mucus whichtraps dust particles and other air pollutants, while the beating cilia sweep the foreign matterand mucus back up towards the larynx and out ofthe lungs.
