Brain tumour. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) scan of a sagittal (side) section throughthe head of a 39 year old man with a brain stemglioma (red). Glioma, a central nervous systemtumour, arises from glial cells. About half of allprimary brain tumours are gliomas. Brain stemglioma specifically affects one of the structuresof the brain stem (midbrain, pons or medulla) andcan be slow growing or rapidly growing. The brainstem is too delicate an area to operate on so theyare very difficult to treat; a biopsy is notalways possible and the tumour cannot be removed.Treatment tends to be with radiotherapy..
