Positron emission tomography (PET) scan of thebrain (temporal plane) of a patient suffering fromepilepsy. This visual record was taken during anepileptic seizure. Such seizures are a symptom ofbrain electrical dysfunction. Here, brain activityis colour coded: from low (blue) to high (yellow).PET scans show level of function of brain tissues, rather than merely give structural information. InPET, a radioactive analogue of a substanceinvolved in normal metabolism (such as oxygen) isinjected into the blood, and tracked to indicatemetabolic activity.
