Brain. Coloured three-dimensional magneticresonance imaging (MRI) scan of a healthy humanbrain. The front of the brain is at left. Thelargest part of the brain, the cerebrum, is madeup of ridges (gyri) separated by fissures (sulci).It controls conscious thoughts and actions. Belowthe cerebrum at lower centre is the brainstem, which links the brain to the spinal cord (notseen) and controls essential functions such asbreathing. To the right of the brainstem is thecerebellum (red), which controls balance andposture. MRI scanning uses a powerful magnet andradio waves to build up slice images through thebody.
