Bound feet of Chinese girl, X-ray. Footbindingis a custom that was practised in China forseveral centuries, until it was discontinued inthe early 20th century. The feet of young girlswere tightly bound in bandages to ensure smallfeet. The bones of the feet would break and deformas the feet grew in the bandages, causing greatpain. Women with severely bound feet would beunable to walk great distances, and wereessentially crippled. This radiograph is dated tobetween 1890 and 1923.
