Vascular bundles can be seen(orange) containing xylem (larger openings) andphloem (smaller openings). The xylem transportswater and mineral nutrients from the rootsthroughout the plant and the phloem transportscarbohydrates and plant hormones around theplant. The yellow fibres are woody supportivetissue. Bamboos are tropical and subtropicalmembers of the grass family Gramineae. The stems, known as canes or culms, can reach great heights.They are widely used in construction, as thesefibres form very tough structures, but are alsoflexible.
