Clyde Fitch Collection

Clyde Fitch was an American playwright and dramatist who wrote over 60 plays in his lifetime. He was born in 1865 in Elmira, New York, and attended Harvard University. His first play, The Mummy and Miss Nitocris, premiered on Broadway in 1888. He quickly became one of the most successful playwrights of his time, writing for both Broadway and London's West End. His plays often featured strong female characters who challenged societal norms of the day. Fitch was also a pioneer of realism on stage, using naturalistic dialogue to bring stories to life for audiences. He died at age 44 from tuberculosis but left behind a legacy as one of America's greatest playwrights that continues to this day.
