EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases Isabeau of Baviere, the Queen of France during the reign of Charles VI, in the fifth installment of a six-part series from Mary Evans Picture Library. The portrait, published in 1907, depicts Isabeau in regal splendor, dressed in the finest fabrics and adorned with jewels, reflecting her status as the queen consort of one of Europe's most powerful monarchs. Isabeau, born in 1370, was the daughter of Stephen III, Duke of Bavaria, and Taddea Visconti of Milan. She came to France in 1385 to marry the future King Charles VI, who was then only 12 years old. Isabeau served as regent during her husband's mental health crises and played a significant role in French politics. Her influence extended beyond the French court, as she was also a patron of the arts and supported the renowned painter Jan van Eyck. Despite her contributions to French history, Isabeau's reputation has been tarnished by accusations of immorality and favoritism towards her favorite, the knight Enguerrand de Coucy. These allegations, which were fueled by political rivalries, have cast a long shadow over her legacy. However, recent historical research has sought to rehabilitate her image, recognizing her as a capable and influential queen in her own right. This exquisite photograph, with its rich detail and evocative composition, invites us to contemplate the complex and fascinating life of Isabeau of Baviere, the Queen of France, and to appreciate her as a pivotal figure in the history of France and Europe.
