Queen Ena of Spain as a nurse

Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, formerly Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969), second child and only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg pictured in Red Cross uniform in about 1916. Enas reforming activities were looked upon with suspicion in Spain where it was considered shameful for a woman other than a nun to go near a sick man; the country had no trained nurses at all. Ena began by organising lotteries to raise money to build hospitals and establish nursing training. In 1916 she founded the Spanish Red Cross under her personal direction. She was also president of the anti-Tuberculosis League

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Queen Ena of Spain, formerly Princess Ena of Battenberg, in a rare moment of dedication and service as a nurse during the early 20th century. Born in 1887 as the second child and only daughter of Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg, Ena's life was marked by a strong sense of duty and compassion. During her time in Spain, Ena's reforming activities were met with suspicion, as it was considered shameful for a woman, other than a nun, to go near a sick man. Spain, at the time, had no trained nurses at all. Undeterred, Ena began organizing lotteries to raise funds to build hospitals and establish nursing training programs. In 1916, she founded the Spanish Red Cross under her personal direction, becoming an influential figure in the country's healthcare system. Ena's commitment extended beyond nursing, as she also served as the president of the anti-Tuberculosis League. Her tireless efforts to improve the lives of the sick and less fortunate were a testament to her unwavering dedication and compassion. Despite the challenges she faced, Ena's reforming activities were instrumental in bringing much-needed change to Spain during a time when it was desperately needed. This photograph, taken in 1916, captures a moment of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Ena's legacy continues to inspire us today, reminding us of the power of compassion and the importance of service to others.
