EDITORS COMMENTS
Pyramus and Thisbe: A Timeless Tale of Tragedy and Love in Ancient Babylon This evocative image captures the poignant moment from the ancient Greek myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, a heart-wrenching tale of unrequited love and tragic fate. The Babylonian maiden, Thisbe, is seen here in a state of despair, her once-white veil now stained with blood. The veil, a symbol of purity and innocence, lies in stark contrast to the tragic reality of the situation. Pyramus, a shepherd from nearby, is seen in the background, his own bloodied hand reaching out to the veil, his voice echoing the question that has haunted him: "Can this be Thisbe?" Unbeknownst to him, the lion that had been terrorizing the countryside had attacked Thisbe on her way to meet him, leaving her with grievous wounds. Filled with grief and despair, Thisbe, upon seeing the blood on her veil, had fled in terror, believing Pyramus to be dead. In his despair, Pyramus, unable to bear the thought of living without his beloved, had taken his own life. The tragic tale of Pyramus and Thisbe is believed to have originated in ancient Babylon and was later retold by the Greek poet, Virgil, in his work "Eclogues." The story has been a source of inspiration for countless artists, poets, and writers throughout history, and continues to captivate audiences with its timeless themes of love, loss, and the cruel hand of fate.
