EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting illustration from the 1959 edition of Charles Perrault's timeless fairy tale, Puss in Boots, we see the cunning feline character stopping the King's golden coach in the midst of a bridge crossing. With a silhouetted scene of the royal procession in the background, the focus is on the foreground where Puss, with a determined expression, addresses the King. The King, taken aback by the interruption, looks surprised as Puss delivers the news that his master, the miller's son, is in grave danger. The miller's son, unbeknownst to the King, is actually the true owner of the magical boots that Puss wears. In a clever twist of trickery, Puss had led the King to believe that the miller's son was his master. Despite the deception, Puss's concern for his 'master's' safety is genuine. In the river nearby, the miller's son can be seen bathing, but to the King, it appears as if he is drowning. The water, shimmering under the sun, adds to the sense of urgency and danger. This historical illustration, published in the 1697 edition of Perrault's fairy tales, has been beautifully brought to life by an unknown illustrator in the 1950s. The use of warm colors, intricate details, and the contrast between light and shadow create a captivating scene that transports us back to the magical world of fairy tales.
