Princess Elizabeth (right) and Princess Margaret Rose at the last of the Duke of Yorks Camps, at Balmoral in August 1939. In 1919, the Princesses father, then Duke of York, had become President of the Boys Welfare Association - a position he would accept only on condition that no ceremonial would be attached. He wanted to draw closer to ordinary people and devoted time and consideration to the project for the next twenty years, visiting factories and institutions and organsing annual camps for boys in their late teens - half from industrial backgrounds and half from public schools. The camps were held in the grounds of Balmoral and he and his family acted as hosts and joined in with many of the activities

In this evocative photograph, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret are seen enjoying a moment of relaxation at the last of the Duke of York's annual camps for boys, held at Balmoral in August 1939. The Duke of York, who would later become King George VI, had become President of the Boys Welfare Association in 1919, a position he accepted only on the condition that no ceremonial attachments were involved. He was determined to draw closer to ordinary people and dedicated the next twenty years of his life to the project. The camps, which were held in the grounds of Balmoral, brought together half of the participants from industrial backgrounds and half from public schools.
