EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and opulent photograph, Princess Olga Valerianovna Paley (1865-1929) and her husband, Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich of Russia (1860-1918), are captured with their three children: Vladimir Pavlovich Paley (1897-1918), Princess Irina Pavlovna Paley (1903-1990), and Princess Natalia Pavlovna Paley (1905-1981). The family is seated in an ornate, upholstered chair, surrounded by the opulence of their aristocratic surroundings. Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, dressed in his military uniform, is the second husband of Princess Olga, whom he married in 1894. The couple's marriage was a significant event in Russian society, as Olga was the sister of the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, who was the heir to the Russian throne at the time. Their eldest son, Vladimir Pavlovich, is also seen in the photograph, dressed in a smart suit and looking intently at the camera. The two daughters, Irina and Natalia, are dressed in elegant dresses and sit on their mother's lap and their father's knees, respectively. The photograph offers a glimpse into the wealth and aristocratic class of Russian society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The grandeur of the setting, the elegant attire of the family members, and the formal poses all serve to underscore the family's status and position in Russian society. Despite the opulence of the photograph, however, the family's happiness was short-lived. Tragically, all three of their children were killed during the Russian Revolution, leaving Olga and Paul to mourn their loss. Paul was later executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918, and Olga died in exile in 1929. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and legacy of the Russian aristocracy, and the tragic events that marked the end of an era.
