Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg with family

Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1966), fourth and youngest daughter of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and his wife, Maria Alexandrovna (later Duke and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg), shown here with her husband, Alfonso, 5th Duke of Galliera (1886-1935) and her three sons, from left, Alonso (1912-1936), Ataulfo (1913-1974) and Alvaro, 6th Duke of Galliera (1910-1997). Known as Baby Bea in the family, she married King Alfonso XIIIs cousin but refused to convert to Catholicism. Alfonso was compelled to take away his cousins army commission and titles. After spending time at homes in Coburg and Switzerland, the couple returned to Spain in 1912 where Beatrice aggravated tensions between Alfonso and his wife Queen Ena (Beatrices cousin), openly flirting with the king and allegedly procuring mistresses for him. Eventually, she was ordered to leave Spain once more, although she did return, bravely remaining behind in 1931 after the proclamation of the Spanish Second Republic, to look after the Kings elderly aunt

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1966) is seen with her husband, Alfonso, 5th Duke of Galliera (1886-1935), and their three sons, Alonso (1812-1936), Ataulfo (1913-1974), and Alvaro, 6th Duke of Galliera (1910-1997). The image captures a moment of familial bliss, as Beatrice, affectionately known as "Baby Bea" within the family, gazes lovingly at her husband and children. Princess Beatrice was the fourth and youngest daughter of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and his wife, Maria Alexandrovna. She caused a stir when she married Alfonso, a cousin of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, in 1908. However, Beatrice refused to convert to Catholicism, which led to Alfonso taking away his cousin's army commission and titles. Following their marriage, the couple spent time at homes in Coburg and Switzerland before returning to Spain in 1912. Beatrice's presence in Spain, however, caused tensions between Alfonso and his wife, Queen Ena (Beatrice's cousin), as she openly flirted with the king and allegedly procured mistresses for him. Eventually, Beatrice was ordered to leave Spain once more, but she bravely remained behind in 1931 after the proclamation of the Spanish Second Republic to look after the King's elderly aunt. Despite the challenges, this photograph captures a tender moment in the life of Princess Beatrice and her family, showcasing the love and bond that they shared. The image is a poignant reminder of the complexities and intricacies of European royal history.
