EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, the heir to the Swedish throne, is seen on his wedding day, June 15, 1905, at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, England. The prince, dressed in full regalia, is shown beaming with joy as he exchanges vows with his bride, Princess Margaret of Connaught. Princess Margaret, the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, was a popular figure in British society, known for her beauty, grace, and intelligence. Her marriage to Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus was a significant event in European royal history, as it marked the beginning of a new alliance between Sweden and Great Britain. The wedding ceremony was attended by numerous European royals, including King George V and Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, King Haakon VII of Norway, and King Christian IX of Denmark. The bride and groom were married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Davidson, and the service was followed by a grand reception at Windsor Castle. Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus and Princess Margaret's marriage was a happy one, and they went on to have four children together: Prince Carl Gustaf, Princess Ingrid, Prince Bertil, and Princess Margaretha. The couple ruled Sweden together until Gustavus Adolphus' untimely death in 1950, at which point Margaret became regent until their eldest son came of age. This photograph captures a moment of joy and celebration in Swedish and European royal history, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power and influence of monarchy in the early 20th century.
