EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful postcard image, created by amateur artist George Ranstead during World War 1, depicts a lighthearted scene from prehistoric times. The two cavemen in the drawing appear to be having a jolly time as they ride on the back of an unidentifiable beast, firing arrows and throwing spears. Ranstead, who served in the Army Pay Corps, was one of many soldiers who took up drawing as a hobby during the war. His artwork reflects the influence of the illustrated magazines of the period, with subjects ranging from wartime humor to images of pretty girls. Despite the chaos and hardships of the war, Ranstead's drawing transports us back to a simpler time, where the pleasures of hunting and camaraderie were the focus. The cavemen's joyous expressions and the lively action of the scene make this a captivating and charming piece of art. The postcard, which dates back to circa 1916, is a testament to the power of art to provide a momentary escape from reality, even in the midst of war. Ranstead's talent and creativity continue to inspire us today, offering a glimpse into the past and reminding us of the enduring human desire for connection and adventure.
