EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of arrival for a group of Portuguese soldiers as they disembark from an English train in Hampshire during the First World War. Dated between 1917 and 1918, these soldiers are likely among the thousands who were brought to the UK to aid the war effort by working in the New Forest to produce much-needed timber. The Portuguese Army, a valued ally of the British during the conflict, sent over 50,000 troops to the UK to help with the production of timber, which was essential for the construction and repair of ships, weapons, and other military infrastructure. The soldiers are seen here stepping down from a carriage, their uniforms and equipment heavy with the weight of their journey. The train, bearing the insignia of a prominent English railway company, had transported them across the English Channel and through the British countryside. The New Forest, with its vast expanse of woodland, provided the perfect location for the Portuguese soldiers to work. They lived and labored in makeshift camps, cutting and hauling timber to be transported to various military and industrial sites. This photograph offers a glimpse into the lives of these soldiers, who, despite being far from home, played a crucial role in the war effort. The image is a poignant reminder of the international cooperation and solidarity that characterized the First World War, as well as the sacrifices made by soldiers from all corners of the globe in the name of peace and victory.
