EDITORS COMMENTS
Pope Julius II (1443-1513), born Iginio Giuliano della Rovere, is depicted in this stunning 19th century print from Mary Evans Picture Library. Elected Pope in 1513, Julius II was a pivotal figure in the Renaissance period, known for his patronage of the arts and his military campaigns. Born into a noble family, Giuliano della Rovere rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a cardinal in 1471 at the young age of 28. He was a master of political intrigue and played a key role in the election of several popes before finally ascending to the papacy himself. During his reign, Julius II is perhaps best known for his patronage of the arts. He brought Michelangelo to Rome to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, commissioned Raphael to paint the Stanze di Raffaello, and supported other artists such as Titian and Bramante. He also undertook extensive building projects, including the restoration of St. Peter's Basilica. However, Julius II was also a military leader, leading campaigns against the French and the Venetians. His military successes helped to secure the Papal States and establish the Papacy as a major political power in Europe. Despite his accomplishments, Julius II was not without controversy. He was known for his temper and his ruthless methods, including the infamous "Ban of the League," which excommunicated several prominent cardinals. This print captures the essence of Pope Julius II, a complex and dynamic figure who played a crucial role in the Renaissance period. With his piercing gaze and regal attire, he exudes power and authority, a fitting representation of a man who left an indelible mark on history.
