APSLEY HOUSE, London. General Sir James Shaw Kennedy (1788-1865) sketched by Jan Willem PIENEMAN in 1821 (WM 1540-1948). In 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo, Captain Kennedy served on the staff of Altens 3rd Division, which withstood several French cavalry charges. EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative sketch of General Sir James Shaw Kennedy, created by Dutch artist Jan Willem Pieneman in 1821, captures the essence of a military hero who had recently earned his place in history. Kennedy, born in 1788, served valiantly during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 as part of Altens 3rd Division. During the intense conflict, Kennedy was struck in the side and temporarily removed from the battlefield. Tragically, one of his horses was killed and another was wounded beneath him. Despite these setbacks, Kennedy's resilience and determination were unwavering. Following the battle, Kennedy's historical accounts of Waterloo became invaluable resources for future generations. This sketch, which was acquired by the National Army Museum in 1948 (WM 1540-1948), serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the Georgian era. The intricate details of Kennedy's uniform and the somber, yet determined expression on his face, convey the gravity of the events he had witnessed. Pieneman's skillful rendering of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the image, making it a captivating and enduring testament to the heroism of the past." Historic England's Photo Library preserves and shares images like this one, allowing us to explore and learn from the rich history of our past. This sketch of General Sir James Shaw Kennedy, sketched by Jan Willem Pieneman in 1821, is a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by those who served in the military during the Georgian era, particularly during the pivotal Battle of Waterloo.
