An interesting photograph, taken around 1897 from a rough embankment near Whetstone. The navvy is stood beside a temporary signal box that has been erected to control the traffic of contractor's wagons and locos that were employed to bring men and materials to and from the construction sites. The structure's roof appears to consist of roughly cut railway sleepers covered with stones and spoil.
