Interior of the navvy Mission Room at Calvert
This timber hut near Calvert, with its simple wooden benches, paraffin lamps and small lengths of carpet, are the unlikely premises of the Navvy Mission Society. Indeed, only the modest pulpit provides a clue to the building's significance. It was here that navvies and their families could attend services, readings and Sunday School. These activities were designed to give the navvy communities an enthusiasm for the gospel and an understanding of the bible, a knowledge that was hoped would curb their notoriously immoral behaviour.
