Brick arch bridge and permanent way
Taken at an unknown location around 1898, this photograph captures the final stages of construction for the Last Main Line. Spanning the twin tracks of the mainline permanent way is a handsome brick arch overbridge. Large quantities of ballast have been piled along the centre of the trackbed: these stones would soon be packed evenly over the sleepers to restrict the movement of the tracks and to help with the drainage of the line.
