Temporary footbridge
The notes made by S. W. A. Newton about his photographs say that this view of the Canfield Place to Marylebone construction work shows a 'Temporary footbridge south of West Hampstead station'. The lines running beneath the wooden footbridge are those of the Metropolitan Railway, and one of their 'A' class 4-4-0 tank engines can just be seen taking on water in the station platform. There is an abundance of scaffolding supporting the bridge, and to the right are some lattice steel sections that look set to replace the wooden bridge parapets. Note the wear on the main line rails compared to the siding on the left.
