Contractors' 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, BRACKLEY.
Hunslet Engine Co. 0-6-0 saddletank, BRACKLEY, No. 164 of 1876, seen in a cutting near 'Brackley Fields' (according to S. W. A. Newton's notes). At the time, the locomotive was employed on Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley) being constructed by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1894 and 1898. One of the crew stands on the footplate while the other leans against the engine's smokebox. Coupled to the rear of the locomotive is a wooden bodied drop-side wagon loaded with ballast. Note the clean cutting sides and the new lineside fencing.
