North portal of Sherwood Rise tunnel
A line of contractor's temporary railway enters the north portal of Sherwood Rise tunnel, hewn out of the rock at the end of a steep cutting. Built by Logan & Hemingway as part of Contract No.1 (Annesley to Leake), the completed tunnel was some 662 yards (605 metres) long, and travelling passengers would emerge from the southern portal into the short cutting that was home to Carrington Station.
