Steam navvy and contractor's wagons at Nottingham
This is railway construction in earnest, photographed at the site of Bulwell Common Station, Nottingham. A steam navvy, complete with an improvised cab of wood and corrugated metal, sits on contractor's temporary rails which are relatively well laid and maintained. At the centre of the picture, a line of laden tipping wagons ferry the spoil along the muddy tracks. The points in the foreground are particularly crude, and appear to consist of nothing more than lengths of tracks secured with wooden blocks. Note the disused track bed on the right, and the steep sides of the cutting which still bear the marks of the excavator's powerful shovel.
