BEACON ROMAN FORTLET, Martinhoe, Devon. Now succumbing to the inevitable effects of coastal erosion, this Roman fortlet and signalling station balances precariously on the north Devon coastline. The fort, whose earthworks measure approximately 80 metres in circumference was excavated in the 1960s. Archaeologists found evidence of occupation dating the camp to the 1st century AD.
