Transport - London to Yorkshire Motorway - The M1 - Nr Dunstable
A workman sweeps rubble off a finishes part of the new London to Yorkshire motorway on the longest straight section, six miles long, near Dunstable road junction. On November the 2nd 1959 the first section of the motorway linking London and Birmingham, from the north end St. Albans by-pass near Luton to connections with the Birmingham and Holyhead roads at Dunchurch and Crick (near Rugby) were formally opened to traffic. Construction of this section took 19 months.
