A high altitude oblique taken over Cambridgeshire by the USAAF, March 1944. The main photo reconnaissance aircraft used by the US airforce during World War II was the twin-engine Lockheed F-4/5 Lightning reconnaissance aircraft. With a range of over 450 miles, the unarmed former fighter plane flew from bases in southern England, undertaking photomapping and surveillance using multiple remotely-controlled camera installations.
