'The Irish Treason Shop', 1869.'The Irish Treason Shop', 1869. The Fenian movement was still causing the British Government problems. The movement had not been pacified by the measures introduced through the recent Irish Bill, and continued to agitate in the most threatening manner for the separation of Ireland from Britain and its authority. Here, a Fenian 'patriot' can be seen buying arms from what looks like a catholic priest. Outside the door, Mr Punch looks sternly up at Prime Minister Gladstone, dressed for the occasion in the uniform of law and order. It is time, according to Punch, for action to be taken. From "Punch, or the London Charivari", December 4, 1869.
