'Both Sides of the Question', 1871.'Both Sides of the Question', 1871. The tradesman has his pint pot of beer to hand. Beer was the staple tipple of manual labourers and was often not considered to be dangerous by the temperance movement in the same way that spirits were. However, the drinking habits of the lower classes was subject to a great deal of discussion and argument during the 1860s and 1870s. From "Punch, or the London Charivari", October 21, 1871.
