Icon of St Nicholas, Russian. The central portrait is surrounded by 18 scenes from his life. The patron saint of Greece and Russia and the model for Santa Claus, St Nicholas (300-399) was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. He was imprisoned by the Roman emperor Diocletian (245-313) but released by Constantine (c275-337).
