'Napoleon In The Bellerophon', 1815 (c1850s).'Napoleon In The Bellerophon', 1815 (c1850s). After his defeat at Waterloo and a failed attempt to escape to the United States, Napoleon surrendered to Captain Maitland on board HMS 'Bellerophon' on 15 July 1815. Bellerophon transported Napoleon to Plymouth harbour, where he remained on board before being transferred to HMS 'Northumberland which carried him to his final exile on St Helena.
