Grass stem, SEMGrass stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph(SEM) of a section through a grass stem (familyGraminaceae). At upper centre is the vascularbundle, which consists of phloem (turquoise) andxylem tissue. Xylem is composed of annulartracheids (light green), pitted vessels (yellow),fibrous tracheids (grey) and an intercellularspace (round, bottom). The xylem transports waterand mineral nutrients from the roots throughoutthe plant, while the phloem carries carbohydratesand hormones around the plant. The vascular bundleis enclosed in a sheath (dark green) andsurrounded by sclerenchyma (brown thick-walledcells), which is supportive tissue, and parenchyma(brown thin- walled cells), where the primaryplant functions take place.
