Dicotyledon plant stem, SEMDicotyledon plant stem. Coloured scanningelectron micrograph (SEM) of a section through thestem of a geranium plant ( Pelargonium sp. ), atypical dicotyledon plant. The centre of the stemis filled with large xylem vessels fortransporting water and mineral nutrients from theroots to the main body of the plant. Five bundlesof phloem tissue (pale green) serve todistribute carbohydrate and plant hormones aroundthe plant. The xylem and phloem are surrounded bya ring of parenchyma cells (purple). The stemis enclosed by a layer of epidermal cells, some ofwhich are specialised as hair cells or oil glands.
